Visiting Nursing Association Celebrates 125th Anniversary

The Visiting Nursing Association (VNA) of Western New York will celebrate its 125th anniversary, with a calendar of events this summer and fall honoring alumni, employees, current physician partners and longtime employees.

Founded in 1885, the VNA was the first visiting nursing organization in America.

Since then, we have become one of the oldest charities in the nation and remain the largest home health agency in the Western New York region. The VNA offers products and home care services for everyone from newborns to elderly patients.

Among the events being planned for the year long celebration:

  • VNA Gala – to be held on Saturday, November 6th at the Ellicott Square Building
  • Community based events in Chautauqua, Genesee, Allegany and Niagara counties
  • “Music at the Pier” was held on June 24th at the Dunkirk Pier. The VNA of WNY was a major sponsor of this event.
  • “Day in the Life of a Home Care Nurse” --Legislative & “VIP” patient home visits with our local elected officials across Western New York throughout the Summer.
  • 125th Commemorative Calendar – a monthly calendar dedicated to the employees and patients of the VNA of WNY.
  • VNA “Patient Day” – held on Wednesday, August 25th, is a celebration of our 125 years of caring for the WNY community with our current patients. VNA nurses, therapists and home health aides will be celebrating the VNA’s 125th Birthday with our patients at their home visits.
  • Employee Picnic & Recognition Events
  • Historical Artifacts Exhibits & Displays at various events throughout the year.

Congressional RecordToday, the VNA employs over 900 people throughout Western New York. Point of service technology utilized by the nurses and therapists include wireless laptops, digital cameras, pulse oximetry, anti-coagulation monitoring, Telehealth, along with therapy modalities such as E-Stim, Vital Stim and Anodyne. The VNA focuses on teaching chronic care patients self-management and care including lifestyle choices, nutrition and infection control.

One of the strongest characteristics of the Association has been its pioneering spirit and its cooperation with all other social and health agencies in the community. As the healthcare system evolves toward more community based models of preventative and chronic care management, VNA is well positioned to lead the way.
